Sharing empowering stories of courage, resilience and strength

Meet Anita Messmer!

My journey began in January 2023. I was diagnosed with non-invasive ductal carcinoma in situ, stage 0, grade 3. I had many thoughts after receiving the news. How would I tell my four young adult daughters, as well as the financial burden it would place on me and my husband. It's a sad but real world we live in when the financial burden of a cancer diagnosis is one of the first things on your mind.

Looking into resources was overwhelming for me and my husband. In all honesty I didn’t want to apply because it made things feel more real. However when we applied and received the Pay It Forward grant, it brought me to tears. It was a moment of hope and relief in the midst of fear and uncertainty. The timing of the grant could not have been more perfect. It came through right as a bill of the same amount was due. It allowed us to focus on my health, removing the fear and stress that was counterproductive to healing. It truly felt like a “God Thing” and a reminder from Him that He was in control, and everything would be okay.

As 2023 was coming to a close we were all too ready to get it behind us. We learned so much, cancer took some from us, but I love to say it taught us more than it took. One of the most important things we learned is, it’s okay to let others help you.

Meet Kathy!

"I couldn't believe there was an organization that might help ease our financial burden as we concentrated on getting well. When we received the notice in the mail both my husband and I exhaled a deep breath. Thank you. You've made this difficult path with all the things to think about much, much easier."

Meet Annette!

"Pay It Forward was a GODSEND!  We had the health insurance, but it didn’t cover everything.  When we received the $1,800 bill from the radiation oncologist, we had no idea where the money was going to come from to pay it.  Then we learned about Pay It Forward.  I almost cried when I got the call saying we were accepted, and $1500 would go toward paying off that bill.  I don’t know how we would have done it without that fund."

Meet Chalase!

"Thanks to all their volunteers and those that donate, we didn't have to worry about keeping our kids in our house or food on the table. They just aren't paying a bill, they are giving you peace of mind, breathing room, time to think, a moment to relax, doubt removed; if only for a moment.

Those are the things that you need while you are battling cancer. Because cancer doesn't care if you are a mother of two and you don't have time to "fight" with it. Pay It Forward Fund took away some of my stress, and when you are fighting cancer, that is a really hard thing to do! Thank you again; that really doesn't seem like enough to say, but those are the only words I have"
